There are three types of letter 'a' in Indus valley script(
see page 2). One of these is
like a staff, the other is like a standing muskmelon and the third is like a
circle. These three shapes appear side by side. These three may symbolize, in
accordance with upanishadic text, the manifestation of soul with three qualities
- self name, copulated like a man and woman, and separated. The first shape may
be used to denote subtle level, thesecond shape may
symbolize the duality of nature, the gross level and the third shape may be for multiplicity of
universe created by a single soul.
Indus script names this manifestation as 'name - form'. The symbol used for this purpose is two staff type letters a. This can be interpreted in the way that out of these two, one signifies life force and the other food. This manifestation is a combination of life force(an) and food(anna). The life force can be called fire which devours all food and exists in all creatures. This has also been named as Atri. This universal soul 'an', which can be taken hold of by food, has also been named as Indra in Indus valley culture. There is found a seal in Harappa where word Indra has been written in such a manner that a human figure has been formed. One hand of this figure holds letter u and the other letter p. Letter p is symbolic of distant, super. To clarify this symbol, there are two additional letters - a of first? type beside the hand holding letter p. As has been stated above, these two symbolize life force and food. This may be taken to mean that only with the cooperation of super power this soul becomes the manifestation of life and food. The other hand holding letter u also has word food( 'anna') beside it, but the shape of 'a' in 'an' is different. This 'a' may be symbolic of subtle level, as letter u always symbolizes light.
